UX & UI - News App Design

BRIEF

BRIEF

In 1932, Mr. Ramnath Goenka, a man of incredible grit, founded The Indian Express. He stood against Indira Gandhi during the emergency and was instrumental in preserving the freedom of the press. He was the very picture of courage and fearlessness in the quest for revealing the unadulterated truth. To this day, these values reflect in both the newspaper and its readers.

When we met the Indian Express team, they had already begun their shift to the mobile platform. All they wanted was a better-looking iPhone app. But when we took a look, we realised that the app didn't have the same status or values as the newspaper. Simply making it prettier wouldn’t be enough.

It was a critical juncture for IE. A new generation of millennials lived in an always-connected world powered by a 5" supercomputer in their pocket. They weren’t accustomed to reading the news‘paper’ and it was imperative to find a way to that audience. At the same time, IE’s present readers were loyalists who had come to expect a certain experience and were slowly making the transition to mobile.

THE INDIAN EXPRESS TEAM

THE INDIAN EXPRESS TEAM

It was around this time that the IE team was also looking to update their editorial and information design. While most other news media focus on publishing a large quantity of content, The Indian Express wanted to focus on quality as they always had. We worked with them to determine how we could prioritise the four sections they were known for: Politics, Economics, Op-eds and sports.

CLIENTS SPEAK

The express app has been a much longer journey than anyone imagined but it's finally out, and we're very proud. The design is entirely fresh. I knew that design would be critical differentiator for us from other news brands who were well established in the space. Anushka didn't let us down, she created tiny focus groups of news-hounds, studied their news consumption habits, learned the space ground-up and then got into proposing designs.

Their biggest talent is her attention to detail which is critical. They are perfectionists.
